Important festivals and holidays in Costa Brava

Jan 1st – ‘Any Nou’ (New Year’s Day national holiday)

Jan 6th – Reis (Epiphany).

On the eve of epiphany, the three Kings give sweets to the local children. Their method of arrival reflects the nature of the Town or Village. In Roses, for example, which has a thriving fishing industry, the Kings arrive by boat. The day is celebrated throughout Catalonia.

The Carnestoltes Carnival

Feb/Mar – Carnestoltes (Lent)

Lasting for several days from the eve of Lent there are processions decorated floats and people dressed in fancy dress. You’ll find giant paellas being cooked on the beach at Roses Carnestoltes… and lots of delicious local wines. Weirdly enough the carnival culminates on Ash Wednesday, when a sardine is ceremoniously buried in the sand on the beach as an offering to the sea.

Best 5 beaches on Le Costa Brava, Spain

To some, Le Costa Brava is known as Spain’s ‘Wild Coast’, possibly because of the popularity in tourists who arrive every year to enjoy the Sun, Sand and oodles of Sangria. There’s a huge amount to see and do in Le Costa Brava as you’d expect with a tourist destination, however if you are looking for the best beaches to head for then look no further. There are many beaches along the coastline, but some are better than others. Excessive development and cheap package holidays have invaded many of the beaches… but there are still some gems to head for.

While the best time to visit the region is May-June (before the crowds) or September-October (after the crowds), the beauty of the amount of quality beaches is that if you find one too crowded, you can always head to the next one and still be assured of a relaxing day out.

Here are our top 5 beaches, all of which offer a unique location, backdrop and facilities:

Platja de Pals Beach

Situated near Palamós, Platja de Pals is one of the only sandy beaches that have escaped excessive development thanks to local opposition. It’s concealed by pine forests and has some beautiful coves either side. During peak season it can become a little crowded, but there are lots to do here, try diving in the crystalline water, walking along the old smugglers’ path around the coast or exploring the ancient Iberian settlement at the eastern end of the beach.
