Dating way back to the 8th Century the ‘Old Fort’ as it’s commonly known has protected Corfu Town throughout a number of historically significant conflicts. It’s stooped in history and a fantastic place to visit if you’re looking to absorb yourself in culture on your travels. Today, the Old Fort remains one of the Islands best attractions and when you visit it’s easy to see why.

Originally a Byzantine castle, it was rebuilt by the Venetians in its first phase (1400-1500) – the original Byzantine walls were strengthened and the canal opened (Contra-Fossa), which also created the artificial island accessed by a movable bridge.

The second stint of development happened between the16th-18th cent. Starting in 1546-1588 and ending with the additions and alterations made by the British.
