Visiting Cordoba, Granada and Sevilla – Andalucía culture at its best

Tucked away inland behind the costas and a myriad of mountains, lie three of Europe’s most culturally enriching cities – Cordoba, Granada and Sevilla. For many, old Andalucia epitomises Spain: Bullfights, Moors, gypsies and flamenco dancing. For centuries, Andalucia was one of the poorest parts of Spain, but because of its past and deep-founded love for simple pleasures that have become so embedded into Spanish culture, the fortunes of this region have changed, helped inexplicably by the huge amounts of tourists that visit Andalucia’s three most culturally credited cities each year.

Feria de Cascamorras festival 2011, Baza, Andalucia

Andalucia is notorious for its bizarre and wacky festivals and none more so than the Feria de Cascamorras held in the historical market towns of Baza and Guadix, in the province of Granada. The event takes place on the 6th September each year.

One extraordinary image that stands out when you visit the town of Baza is the amount of black handprints arbitrarily embossed on many of the town’s whitewashed walls. It is not until you attend the Feria de Baza in early September that you understood the true meaning behind this bizarre spectacle.  This particularly popular Spanish fiesta kicks off with the Feria de Cascamorras, when thousands of locals cover themselves in oil and throw paint at the “Cascamorras” as he attempts to steal the Virgin statue from Baza.

Why Golf in Costa Del Sol remains recession proof

In Andalucia (Costa Del Sol) golf is big business and no large holiday complex or new housing estate, it seems, is complete without a golf course attached to it. Golf tourism is one of Andalucia’s biggest prides and despite Spain being on the brink of economic disaster, with unemployment rates plummeting, the tourist industry in turmoil, and the former property boom abruptly sinking, golf in Andalucia remains a vibrant success, seemingly unaffected by the economic collapse.

In 2009, the 116 golf courses in Andalucia brought a total of 500 million euros to the region. Not only is the sport creating a much needed snippet of success to the tourist industry – an industry otherwise in disarray – but it also generating a vital source of employment.

Top three Spain nudist beaches or “Playas Naturistas”

In 1979, Costa Natura near Estepona on the Costa del Sol – Spain’s first ever nudist beach – was officially opened. Since then nudity has been practised with a vengeance, perhaps as an act of rebellion against a repressive society led by a dictator, which the people of Spain had to conform to for many years. Today there are more nudist beaches in Spain per kilometre of coastline than in any other country in the world and naturists find themselves very well catered for in all areas of the coast.
